The database queries are now run on a different machine from this server. At first glance this has made the more expensive queries a lot more responsive.

Using chrome on a dell xps 13 laptop, and no it seems to be happening pretty randomly. Maybe most commonly when I first open the db--I'll often have to wait 30 seconds or more before I can enter moves onto the board or do anything. Then sometimes searches return quickly, sometimes very slowly.
It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

That is going to be trickier to debug, I'll look into it.
I also recently switched to an hourly (instead of daily) offsite backup regimen, so if you find that queries are particularly slow between 0 and 5 (or so) minutes after the hour, then that would be the cause. If that's the case, then let me know and I'll look into making different arrangements for backups.
Dont know if you are still interested or not. For several weeks now, maybe even a couple of months, database queries have been slow. Since noticing I have used several machines on several different wifi and wired connections. Seems to be worse if I add any variables.
What kind of queries are slow? Preliminary tests show that for me a search where only one player's rating is restricted, and the other not (above 0), those stick out as slow queries.
