AI 9, or maybe even 10?

I wonder if anyone is working on increasing the skill of the computer players? mm_ai8 is great, but I'd like to see some 1500, 1600, 1700+ artificial intelligence level players too.

really? you rate the mm_ai8 as being under a 1500 skill level?

... taunting ai8

I've only been playing here since 2008.06.08 and have seen ai8 as low as the mid-1100's but never higher than 1400. Never the less, it sure feels like ai8 is between 1500 and 1600. Seems to be a little vulnerable on captures though, or at least when it's player-1. Amazing programming work by Mark. But I'd still like to see an ai9 that at least "felt" like it was a 1700 level player, and a warrior-poet ai10 that would make master-level players sweat.

It is kinda fun taunting ai8, ever try it? You know, like seeing how many open-4's and 5th pair captures you can threaten ai8 with, until it no longer computez (or at least computes correctly). Maybe at that point, ai-players could be programmed to hurl verbal insults or question the marital status of your birth parents.

the rating of the Ai_8 is in no way reflective of its ability,...and here is why.

the Ai does not demand that the point trade games be done in sets alternating colors,...
players will sit as white all day long whooping its black,...this is not a hard thing to do even if it was a Ai_9 or 10...

and its rank will drop..

now if it was required to play in alternating colors, set based,..its rank would be higher im sure.

AI_8 is the highest level incorporated here only because levels 9-18 would take too long to move. If you download the AI from Mammel's site (is it still up I hope?), then you can play AI levels 1 through 18 and the moves are MUCH faster than what you experience with the lag online. I haven't ever gotten around to delving into it, but what little I can remember of it is that the higher levels are pretty daunting and the numeric value of each level corresponds to how many moves ahead the AI is looking.....i.e. AI_9 is 'thinking' 9 moves ahead, AI_10 is working from 10 moves ahead, etc......I think AI_17 only took about 60 seconds or so to move also.......pretty slick stuffs if you ask me.

Here's Mammel's URL for anyone interested in the Download-

I suppose the speed depends a lot on the speed of the computer used (and also whether the position is from an opening book or not) but as I recall a few years back the higher levels like 18 could run pretty darn slowly on positions where there was no opening book involved or a forced win... great program nonetheless.

Retired from TB Pente, but still playing live games & exploring variants like D, poof and boat

Pin the Tail on AI_8

Ahhh yeah you're right Watsu.....Screamin' Mimi (my PC) is a beast lol......others might have a tough(er) time with it, but its a HUGE improvement over what I get from the AI on the site....basically AI_8 can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes on a typical Sunday here, but on my HD its just a few seconds....less than a minute for sure....so pretty much about 3-5 times as fast is what I found....
