"Ned for example, takes like 3 weeks to make 1 move. In a 20 min set he would be like a deer in headlights. I'd bet money he would time out." You're assuming I'm spending that time thinking about moves, as opposed to living a (recently *very* complicated) normal life!

to my mind, there is a vast difference between tb, live, and speed. i personally believe anyone can become a red in tb w/ diligence regardless of skill. not saying there arent skilled tb players (mu and 8 beat me up all the time in live). just saying that the skillset doesnt always translate. and to achieve red live takes exceptional skill. so special props to any and all who seek watsu's challenge! it wont be easy.

i am sorry but i also need to say this... if being red is the definition of a pente master, then i am a bit disappointed. becoming a red live player? i certainly think that qualifies. but to say any red is a pente master diminishes those who truly are.

That's an issue with 300+ Elo point ranges and comparisons over different eras. The person who wins the contest will be a Master not just because they have achieved a 1900 rating, but because of how this contest is conducted - KotH, evaluation of games by acknowledged Masters, and so forth. The winner will be worthy of the title or it won't be bestowed in this case. But in general 1900 is a pretty fair gauge here in live play. Doesn't mean a 2200 won't whup on a 1900 as P2 on occasion. Somewhere between 2200-2300 likely needs to be a different level - international master or whatever it should be called. Chess has the same issue. It's an Elo range thing, except Pente's Elo range is compacted at the highest levels due to P1 advantage, limited number of players, and so on. (all of the above is regarding live play. TB is a different category here in terms of the highest rating levels).

Retired from TB Pente, but still playing live games & exploring variants like D, poof and boat

Yea i go through phases. I currently am in the phase of not even looking at a game unless it expires in 12 hrs lol. Depends on my motivation to play a bunch of games every day.

in the past i would say that you just need a good taunting, mu. but i have been accused (possibly rightly so) of antagonistic behavior. so i will just wish you luck should you choose to follow this endeavor (while saying nasty things about you under my breath). so, good luck!

Having a nice full game room is nice, and definitely a goal, but it's not necessary for KotH gammes. All that takes is two. It's more fun with a group, but climbing (or descending) the ladder can happen at any time. All are welcome in the KotH room, even if not competing in the contest or the hill. Hill players besides the contestants for red are also welcome.
