It may be of interest that it's possible to run java in the browser again, using an amazing piece of tech called "cheerpj". I adapted my java based site with very little effort, and current run both the desktop java and browser based java from the same set of jars.

Probably not - touch screens are not well supported, and mobiles are too wimpy to run it well. Generally java-in-browser runs at less than 10% the speed of java on the same desktop.
