Gomoku and overlines
Posted: Sep 27, 2002, 4:19 AM

I get this emailed to me often so I'd thought I'd just post the reply here to save time.

..

And here is my response.

Its ok to have overlines in regular gomoku (more than 5 in a row). Not
allowing overlines is one of the rules of renju which evolved from gomoku.
You can read the whole history at http://www.renju.nu/r1rulhis.htm

Dweebo -

Below is my response to the last couple of E-mails here, as follows:

>> Did you know that Gomoku is broken? You're not supposed to win on 6 in a row or more. Gomoku rules state you HAVE to have ONLY 5 in a row. <<

>> Just wanted to let you know, <<

To which you responded:

>> Its ok to have overlines in regular gomoku (more than 5 in a row). Not allowing overlines is one of the rules of renju which evolved from gomoku. You can read the whole history at http://www.renju.nu/r1rulhis.htm <<

Me talking:

I'm a bit confused by your response. This person is stating that your site is giving a WIN to someone who is making a 6-in-a-row or more (over-line) at GoMoku.

You stated in your response that it is OK to have over-lines in GoMoku. That doesn't seem to address the problem that they are stating. Perhaps that's why you keep getting the message from different people.

Yes, over-lines are ALLOWED in Go-Moku, but they are NOT supposed to be wins for the player who makes them! Play should continue as usual. I haven't played GoMoku here, but I have at IYT. If your site is giving a WIN to someone who has made an over-line in GoMoku, that is incorrect.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your response. It just wasn't clear to me.

After more talk with progambler and dmitriking, I have decided that I was mistaken in my first post and have now changed the server to allow overlines but not have them be winning moves.
