Possibly this could be split into two or more separate thread for different situations, but unless or until it gets too unwieldly to look at all the possibilities in a single thread, we'll start with one.
1. Often, but not always (sometimes it will work with only 2 caps), once three pairs are captured by one side, the potential for further captures can outweigh the threat of a tria, so that a player can take back initiative from his/her opponent by threatening a pair or potential pair within a tria formation. Example in game one @ 17.) L7 (I think that move could have happened @ 16 as well, since the extension appears to be unnecessary).
2. A capture threat (either created or already existing)on a keystone pair can allow a tria to be ignored as @ 15.) H10 in game two below
further scenarios and examples of when and where a pair threat trumps a tria threat are appreciated...

Here's a (slightly modified) game position where pairs for black will almost (but not quite) trump a tria; as posted here amidst Jumpin721's Pente puzzles. White to play and win in 4, overcoming the pair threat ...
