is it allowed to arrange a Tournament on a private basis?
Posted: Nov 27, 2025, 10:50 AM

Hi there,

I wonder, if it is a allowed to arrange a Tournament on a private Basis ?

- absolutely no Tournament for Money !!

- I like to arrange a Tournament for Beginners or less skilled players > rating 1800 and less

Rules:

- KO System

- two games and a deciding match (decision game) if needed. Each player starts one of the two games

- Time for a Move : three (3) days

I would organize the tournament:
People who want to participate should contact me via PM
I will collect all the names and —after the registration deadline— I create the schedule of who plays against whom.
The players who are playing against each other then arrange the games by inviting each other.
After playing (two games or three if a deciding game is necessary), the players will let me know who won.
They can let me know in a PM or in the Topic, I will start for the Tournament. The winner will then advance to the next round.

This will continue round by round until the semifinals and final.

Is this allowed here?
If so, I will start a new Topic for that and start to arrange it.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, we can discuss them here first, of course.

Thanks

> I like to arrange a Tournament for Beginners or less skilled players > rating 1800 and less

Imagine you have a 1150, 1350, 1550, 1750 and 1950 rated players. In the ideal world they will just based on their ratings, 1950 > 1750 > 1550 > 1350 > 1150. In real world, something may happen so lower rated will beat a higher rated player but the probability of that is quite low. Remember, they gained their respective ratings in games with other players, so rating difference is predicting the probability of different outcomes fairly well.

Setting a plank, "not higher than 1800" or any other, you just choosing a new winner, now it is 1750. Player with 1150 will barely have any chances anyway. Also such limits may push somebody to make some losses on purpose to fit the limit.

So my opinion is simple: either "free to anybody" or limits like "not less than".

I don't see your point Owen. Setting a rating cap should be effective for iamiam's tournament. Sure the higher rated players typically win, but capping will make the games more competitive and give lower rated players a better chance. Same logic as the Pente Amatuers tournament hosted here.

both of you make good points with understandable arguments.
I still think on how to do it and the rules.

At the moment, I still tend to a "up to .... - rule"
If it doesn't work, (f.e. too less players joined the Tournament) I have learned my lesson than, and can think about another Tournemnt with different rules.

At least, it's just a game with fun.

At the moment, I am very happy to have received any response at all, as I now know that there is interest in principle.

Thanks

My expertise is in rated live play. In that realm:

1150 would get trounced by a 1799. 1799 has reasonably solid fundamentals. 1150 does not.

1150,should vs up to 1499.
1500 should vs up to 1699.
1700 should vs up to 1949.
1950 should vs up to 2149.
2150 should vs up to 2300+

Just my opinion.

This may not translate over to turn based. As in tb ratings tend to go much higher. Why im unsure. Perhaps because data base gets involved.
