D-Pente Championship (karlw vs. madhippo): Exciting games!

We got two close games happening right now in the D-pente champs:

Much more balanced than 99% of the top level pente games due to the swap rule that D-pente offers. Consider playing D-pente!

Yes, the swap rule in D-Pente and DK-Pente makes the games more even.

For me at least, I found that 95+% of the D proposals offered by the top couple of players (back when I researched it a few years ago) ended up being won by one side or the other in fewer moves than some of the longest wedge lines. Even positions are just not possible, though it is possible with a great deal of effort to come up with challenging proposals in terms of deciding which side has the slight advantage which leads to a sure win. I found the effort not to be worth it, personally.

Who wants to play the wedge, though? It's a win for P1.

Not all wedges are created equal

Of the 50 or so wedges I played last year, somewhere between zero and one were interesting or noteworthy.

How many of those 50 were in D Pente?

So, you're perhaps at least prepared to admit that there might be wedge lines of interest in D Pente, I take it?

No. I have no idea what you're talking about. The important variations in the wedge don't even happen until the fifth move or so. Wedge in pente = wedge in D-pente. It is exactly the same amount of boring in both.

The whole point of D-pente is to play openings that are not solved, aka the extreme opposite of the wedge.

Which side will you choose to play as if I hypothetically were to offer you the D position 1. C9 D8 2. F9 F8 ?

I personally believe that D-pente should be played with the rule that White's 1st stone must be at K10, but I'd probably just curse your mother under my breath and choose White.

If you want to find out, challenge me to a rated set and we'll get right into it.

Nah, I'd want to choose my wedge proposition more carefully for rated... I'd probably start by looking at 1. C15 and 1. C16 as opposed to 1. C9, but I don't know for sure whether I'd propose either of those or continue analysis.
