Pente Masters 2019 Grand Finals
Posted: Jan 7, 2020, 3:40 AM

This is mainly addressed to tournament director rainwolf, but it pertains to many people so I figured I'd post it here:

If Pente Masters 2019 is the same format as last year's, then I believe the winner of Section 4 wins the tournament outright. I think it makes more sense to have the top two of Section 4 play in a Grand Finals, where you have to win a set to win the tournament (if there is a tie for 2nd, then you play one more round robin). Is there any way to put that in place for this tournament, or is it too late now that it's already started?

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

This tournament/shadow/puppet master feels a bit odd now.

What you describe, namely, a single elimination tournament between the final 2 players, actually used to be the way round-robin was implemented before the last Pente Masters, but pente_gon pointed out this was not how it was described in the FAQ. So I changed it. There's only a super final now if the top 2 finishers come out of the section with equal points.

It is not too late to revert this, but since I already changed it once and it made sense to do so, I'm reluctant to go back and forth between implementations. What are your thoughts?

Since this affects homebrew, madmike and mandragora as well, we should hear what they have to say. Most likely though, the fair thing will be to keep the rules as they were at the start of the tournament. For future reference, though, having a final showdown in a round-robin style tournament seems more climactic.

I'm with Karlw. Play it as written. Although that takes the fun out finishing this tourney. Karlw has already won 4 games and none of the rest can win more than 3.

So, if I understand it correctly, you want
- a super final (single elimination) if there's a clear 1 and 2 in the final section, not necessarily tied.
- a new round-robin section if there's no clear 2
-- if 2,3,4 are tied, then a new section with the 4 of them, otherwise,
-- if only 2 and 3 are tied, a new section with the top 3?

Is this correct?

New tournament start soon and I would like to say that in my opinion tournament should be finished if there is clear 1st place in final section. It is not good to unnaturally prolong tournament and I think that it's better to avoid 2 players final in pente tournament because it's going to be neverending story. If players are good enough set most likely will be tied.

I agree the tournament that never ends is not good.
Just thinking out loud.
Instead of a playoff between tied for first final round players, I propose the winner should be the player with the most cumulative wins.

of course if tied cumulative wins, then the never ending equal players can play till one wins or the other just says enough...

Declaring two players as tournament co champions isn't an unheard of option.

Retired from TB Pente, but still playing live games & exploring variants like D, poof and boat
