Welcome to Pente.org. we are happy to have you here.
This message is a notice to new players, advising them about a common community rule, called the "Tournament Rule".
One final rule of Pente is called the "Tournament Rule". If you play rated games at Pente.org, the tournament rule is used. The tournament rule was proposed by Tom Braunlich to make the game more fair for player 2. It restricts player 1's second move so that player 1's second move must be at least 3 intersections away from the center of the board.
If in a UN-rated game and your opponent requests to play by the "Tournament Rule", please acquiesce to their request and use the rule.
below is a picture to show a visual example of the areas of the tournament rule.
white's second move may be in the Green zone. this is Ok.
White's second move may NOT be in the Red zone. Red zone is NOT ok.
so, in example, the closest coordinate White's second stone can be is N10. if you don't understand what N10 means, simply look at the edges of the board. one side has numbers, the other has letters. simply find the N,.. then find the number 10,.. and follow their lines horizontally and vertically until the 2 lines intersect and cross. this crossing point is known as a coordinate. and since N and 10 meet here, this coordinate is simply called N10.
