Why there is no "i" column ?

It is not very interesting but I'm just curious.

I believe it's because the letter resembles the digit 1 or lowercase L too much. It makes for easier reading.

yeah that's what I've always believed. When talking about move coordinates it used to be (old tom braunlich books on pente strategy) they referenced the center position such as "L1U2" (left 1 up 2 from the center of the board) to describe stone placement.

With the 1-19 and A-T axis coordinates it makes L1U2 more easier to describe with "J12".

so when referring to multiple moves and placement it's much easier to describe move sequences with the current Grid layout for example [Move# P1,P2: 1)K10,J9 2)G10,H9 ].

As rainwolf just stated the problem came up with l,1,i,I where there is some ambiguity for storing\displaying the coordinates for move sequences and discussing them as we do frequently here in the forums. By eliminating the letter "I" from the board and skipping over it (H to J) it's much clearer what stone locations are being described.
