Make sure you are not on 64bit Firefox because Java doesn't work with that at all anymore, it still works for me on 32bit Firefox. You can still get a 32bit version here, and if you have a Java installation, it should work out of the box.
Alternatively, you can use the link to install the game room on your desktop from the dashboard, then you only need a Java installation, and it won't run in the browser.
