Hello,
I am Mark Mammel from College Park, MD, USA (near Washington, DC) I am 36, married and we are about to have our first child at the end of May. I work as a clinical Microbiologist at Children's Hospital in DC, my wife works in Food Microbiology at the FDA.
I started playing Pente and Othello in High School ('81?). I met David Shaman (US Othello Champ) at a Philadelphia Math event. I didn't get into it enough at that time to try any competitions in the US Pente Assoc or US Othello Assoc. I did get a Commodore 64 computer and went to work programming Pente. I had to use assembly language in order for it to look just a few moves ahead.
I got more serious about Pente when I found Richard's PBEM on the Internet and I was able to play against some good players - virag, dbanks, dpriddy, and basplund were there for some of the early games. I was able to get the 1983 championship games from Tommy Maltell of the RIF to help me with openings. After a couple of years of play there some of us decided to start a Pente tournament (svwalker and basplund were co-conspirators). I mananged to tie for third in last year's competition with Igor Sinyov.
I hope to see Pente develop further as a tournament game, I hope someone interested in the game will take over the rights to the game and maybe start an official organizing committee that will hold real tournaments. I would love to play some live tournaments in the US and Internationally.
-Mark
