IYT Tourney and seeded tourneys at IYT

I have been entering ALL Pro Pente tourneys at IYT. (Just Pente before May Main #1, with no tourney rule.) I will probably stop entering all of them sometime in October to make more time for other things like setting up the seeded tourney there. (I have had as many as 90 tourney games going there plus PBEM tourney games and non-tourney games at both places, which isn't pleasant even for a great game!) But I will definitely enter Oct. Main #1. Let's make that a great one!
In regards to the seeded tourneys that I plan on running there, I will make a major announcement about it sometime in mid October at IYT. But here is some particulars that I will probably announce: 1. The tourney will start on January 2nd, 2001 and have a time control of 45 days for each side per game with no move time control. This would eliminate the need for vacation time or weekends off. Players would just 'invite' one another to games with the max of 45 days for each MOVE. That way you could spend 44 days on one move and 1 day on all of the rest of your moves if you wanted. 2. There will be both 'class' tourneys and a large 'open' tourney running at the same time. Players are welcome and encouraged to enter both. In the class tourneys, you only play people within your own general rating range. I would probably break it down similar to what the U.S. Chess Federation does for it's class tourneys, i.e. over 2000, 1800-1999, 1600-1799, 1400-1599, and under 1400. If there is not enough or too many players for a specific category, the ranges can be changed. Players would be welcome to play 'up' a max of one rating class, if they want to play stronger competition, but they could not enter more than one class. 3. The format will be multi-round round robin similar to Mark Mammel's PBEM tourney. There would be 6 players/division with the top 2 plus ties advancing to the next round. This could be changed based on the no. of players entered in the tourney or class.
Players would not be able to 'sandbag' their ratings lower significantly for the class tourney because like U.S. Chess, I also track the highest obtained rating by each player once they reach 20 games played. The ratings floor for each player would be 200 points below their highest obtained rating. Currently, I have only found one player where this would be a factor.
The class tourneys should attract more beginning and intermediate players and promote the game more, as most everyone would have a chance to win their ratings class title.
Currently, my thinking is to only allow players that have an 'established' rating, i.e. 20 rated games played in IYT tourneys, to enter the these tourneys. But I may change that thinking if there is significant interest. Currently there are 61 players with established ratings there, but I expect it will be over 100 by December. For open tourney seeding purposes, I would SUBTRACT 25 rating points for each game under 20 games played. For class tourney seeding purposes, I would ADD 25 rating points for each game under 20 games played, so that you may have to play in a higher class if you don't have an established rating. I would probably require at least 10 rated games completed so that there isn't too much distortion in the seedings from players who have only completed 4-6 games.
If anyone has suggestions for what they would like to see in a seeded tourney, please let me know. Although the above is the format I would like to follow, I would entertain changes to it if enough players make the same suggestion. One interesting thing that we may be able to do in the future is have single-elimination tourneys. These tourneys would take much longer for the same no. of players but could be great fun.
So if you want in on the action of these seeded tourneys, both open and class, enter a few IYT Pro Pente tourneys and get your rating established!

This is in Reply to Gary's message about a seeded tournment. I think its great idea, I would forward to playing people of my (currently very low) level.

I have some questions about how ratings are calculated. Do only tourney games count? What happens to forfeited games? For example, the last tourney I entered there half of group forfeitied before the first move. I can see excluding thse matches, but what about if the games was a few moves in... what would keep a person from forfeiting a game they were in a losing posision, where do you draw the lines between these cases? Are you doing these ratings calculations offline independant of the IYT server? What is the chance that we will be able to see what games have affected our rating on the site?
Ok well, again thanks for the work you are doing Gary. These are just a few things that I though of when I read your message.

sorry everyone, i have been very busy with my work nad barely have time to keep up my IYT games, let alone the message board and pente.org.
I have a couple of questions and comments on messages that i have been reading on here. Just to let you know how far back i started...m#168...feel like i am reading a nove. lol.
first thing i would like to ask is, gary, how do you rate the players playing at iyt? I have never really payed much attention to the ratings. I know that there are ratings at Dweebo's, but never thought much on how the ratings were given. I have been entering tournaments at IYT since last year always go-moku, pente, and now pro pente. I am getting progressively better, since i get to play with most of you here. And yes, gary tears me up every time. lol. 2. Has anyone given any more thought to a pente player map I would love to see if anyone is in my area. I haven't played anyone face to face in probably 16 years. I have only been playing religiously this time for about 1 1/2 years. 3. I have built a pente board at work, made it out of Stainless Steel and Brass. If anyone would like the directions on how i built it, i would be happy to forward on to them...no charge of course. I will warn you though...had to smelt the brass and mill the stainless steel. I will get a picture of it and load it on the computer so you guys can see it...i love it. 4. How many people are registered here as members? I mainly see the same 9-12 people posting, as i am sure most people view the messages, as i do. I gain wisdom from them more than giving my beginner advice. LOL
I enjoy seeing the messages and really enjoy playing everyone at IYT and Dweebo's.
Take care Steve at IYT Thundr007 at Dweebo's

Steve (007), Wow!! I would love to see that pente board! I know there is some way to post a picture here at the club. I think you can see all the club members from the members link on the left? Joe

"The Board"

The board is at work still...i am putting the final touches on it. Trying to polish it smooth as glass. We have been very busy lately at work, so I haven't worked on it like I was. As soon as I am done, I will take a picture and give it to Mark so he can post it. After this one is complete, I think I am going to make one out of wood. Something like driftwood, or spanish cedar. Something that makes a statement if you know what I mean. steve
