who manages Pente ?

I know pente is not a traditional game, and the
trademarks are still active. Who would I ask for
permission to implement Pente on another site?

Winning Moves is the current licensed seller of the boards, if that helps any: https://winning-moves.com/product/pente.asp

It's interesting that someone is licensed to
sell games under the name "pente" but where did
they get the license from?

For that matter, who gave permission for the game
on this site?

Before Winning Moves, Hasbro owned the rights to the name, having bought them from Gary Gabrel, the creator. I think this specific site url was donated to Peter Hewitt AKA dweebo circa 1999, but before that he was hosting Pente and other games on a Purdue website. I'm not aware of anyone or any site which has had issues with using the name. I'm not privy to details on such websites but I doubt sites are paying licensing rights to use the name on websites. Frankly, Winning Moves likely sells more boards than they otherwise would without such websites.

Why do I get the feels, that this guy is borderline considering to petition to winning moves to have them sue us for using the name pente. For the record, I was in correspondence with winning moves before about their interest in collaborating on something with regards to this site. They are well aware this site exists. I don't think they have any issues with it. If you want to go make a pente site of your own, im pretty sure you can do so. Heck, we already sold the code of this site to someone not too long ago who wanted to give it a go. Anyways, I didnt like the drift of, is this site violating the law or something.
I don't think we need permission. If winning moves has an issue im sure they can come talk to rainwolf. This site doesn't make enough money to sue for. Just enough donations to keep the lights on.

unless you guys know ddyer, i have been suspicious of his motives since his first post. he joined a few years ago but never played a game. I think that is strange. My first thought was a phishing to play some unsupported java stuff.

You're overrun by conspiracy mentality. I run a game
site and I'd like to add pente to it; but I prefer to
ask permission rather than forgiveness for unauthorized
implentations.

ok , but why don't you play here? i might want to play at your place, but where? Some Java place that is suspect...since Java online is suspect! Else why did Java go away and why do you want to advertise

Java (in browsers) went away because oracle didn't want to
fix the bugs in the security model. But ask any developer
if they'd rather develop in pure java or javascript.

Aside, there's a miraculous technology that brings
java back to the browser - I posted in the development
forum about that.

Anyway, I'm interested in Pente so it can be played
alongside the 100+ other games on my site. I have
a family of "n-in-a-row" games which really ought
to include Pente.

If you're so worried, then go ask winning moves for permission. I mean, if you so worried, even if we tell you no permission is needed, you're still going to go ask winning moves anyways am i right? So seems wasted time to come at us about it right?
I mean, since you're a serious big site owner n stuff, and you believe in asking permission, Google can locate you the winning moves email. Go check, and let us know how it goes.

Cheers
