Chasing pairs to win
Posted: Oct 27, 2008, 4:06 AM

Somewhat similar to but not identical to this topic is the concept of chasing after an unprotectable fifth pair in order to win. I've had a few games in which I've had to look 7-8 moves ahead to see how to force pairs and capture them in order to get my pair count up to the crucial number 8 necessary to force a game line by threatening pairs, but in the following gamelike position created by Oleg Stepanov, the pair count is already at 8-8. White to move and win in 6... (his solution link is broken, but if you can't figure out the solution you can ask)

Further game examples illustrating the lengths that chasing after the fifth capture can lead a game into appreciated.
