Anybody read Japanese?
Posted: Feb 9, 2021, 4:58 PM

Thanks to some assistance from an academic librarian, I now have a couple of titles for 1920s era Japanese books on 5 in a row games. Based on looking at a few of the diagrams in the first book, I suspect it's on renju. The second one may well be on Ninuki renju (Pente's older and more complex brother), but so far the diagrams I've looked at in it aren't providing me (as an English reader) enough information to tell much about the games. I'll have another look soon at a greater magnification and peruse the book further, but some knowledge of Japanese would definitely be helpful.

Here's a link for the one which I think might be ninuki:

As an example of why I think this is a book about ninuki renju instead of renju, consider the second diagram on page 11. In renju, if black plays next s/he wins. If white plays next they have only one move to prevent black from winning. No point in showing this diagram for renju, in other words.

Very cool, Rich. Any thoughts on whether or not those games might be ninuki renju? I've had one "yes" and one "surely not" so far.

So do gomoku and renju, so the board alone doesn't help determine the game. It's clearly gomoku, renju or ninuki, but which is the question.

My ex is from Japan. But I'm not calling her to do translations lol. I think you can hire someone on fiverr to do it tho.

Thanks, zk. I might have a lead, but if not I'll look into the fiverr option.

Apparently, this is written in old style Japanese and may require a specialist to translate.
