I notice that haijinx's location on his profile is Salem, Oregon. Brf and I are both from Portland, and I think a few other (current and former) top Americans are from Oregon as well. Does any historian of the game know why Oregon is such a hotbed for pente?

I've wondered the same question about Oregon.

That said, I only moved to Oregon seven years ago. I'm a native Texan and the son of a law enforcement officer who introduced me to the game when it came out in 1978/1979. I actually read the first volume Pente strategy book when it came out...as a kid.

I'd probably count me a a late bloomer from the Oklahoma-Texas cluster, at least in terms of location and introduction to the game. There were so many players in that geographic area at the time...all my friends played the game as a kid.

The lull of 25 years throws things a bit.

I'm curious about tournament chess players. I know there's me and karlw, not sure who else.

Dunno, Karl, but if I had to guess I'd say it's the rain. Back in the 90s I used to live and play in PDX. Interestingly, 2/5ths of the 5 available library copies of Pente Strategy which show up on worldcat.org are in Oregon. Copies are available at OSU, Eugene public library, Auburn College in Alabama, the Library of Congress and The College of New Jersey.

Too bad I didn't know about the Eugene copy when I played Pente there while studying at LCC...

I've always wondered whether I might have planted a Portland Pente seed or two the time in around 1992 or so when I took $10 and a Pente board to visit my local elementary school's chess club.
Re: chess and Pente players - progambler was a 1700 chess player who was a 2200 postal player back around the early 2000s. Braunlich and Tesh came from chess backgrounds as well.
