Wow karl. That was a real hoot. What with your masterful use of 'irony' and all. Where do you get this material? College? Or does the gene of comedic genius just run rampant through your family?

Ahhhh well yes, considering the absolute void of sarcasm to be found on the internet wether it be blogs, forums, sites dedicated to the subject of sarcasm itself, or the fact that .....omg this is just too damned easy. I gotta stop. Bad Squirrl. OK....I'm taking a vow of "I'm not gonna bludgeon dumbasses for fun". I think it'll be a very enlightening, yet shortlived repose

Just cuz the only thing you can do on the internet is be an idiot doesn't mean that the rest of us are bound by the same constraints Karl. Crap. I did it again. OK. My vow starts NOW.

yeah but the facts:
-pente is a beautiful game with one major flaw: White's huge advantage -all variations thought up so far have attempted to remedy this flaw to some degree; none have really succeeded without fundamentally altering the beautiful gameplay -these "boat rules" are the worst of both worlds: they fundamentally alter game play (endgame) without doing really anything to remedy the flaw of white's huge advantage.
This is why i have such disregard for boat rules. nod can say "oh but don't resist change;" i say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. if we keep accepting pointless variations on this great game, soon the top players wont be able to play each other because they'll each have their own preferred variant, and will refuse to play any other variant because they're not as good at it. it's bullshit.
next person to talk, please try and directly answer my points. let's stay on topic for once.

LOL....staying on topic and not talkin' about anyone's mom, here goes. Yes all the variants alter gameplay, but what seems to be lost on the 'purists' is that the 'purity' of the core game isn't in contention. Noone ever suggested that we change the game of pente to include capturing 3's as in keryo. Keryo is a VARIANT, not a substitute any more than the variants of chess, backgammon, etc. The wrong question is being asked here. The question is a simple one of wether the game employing said rules is worth playing. My humble opinion is that the game of pente will always be what we play today, and that there are many twists to throw in for fun & variety. I must admit there are times that I prefer keryo over regular pente, but to date haven't really been all that enticed by the other variants I've heard of.....this boat thing sounds like fun tho....a whole new game really....wether I/we ever get around to it or not....who knows? I'm not too concerned about the original game being compromised because of the variants tho.........
