City of God is a great film. I know subtitles put some people off, but I love this film. It is set in the flavelas of Rio de Janeiro, and it is a great film. The documentary on the DVD is also really good. I rarely watch the extras on DVD's but both the film and the documentary are hard-hitting. Another film that is lesser known perhaps, but on the same subject, is Bus 174 - that really is powerful. And it's all real footage, and interviews. Not so much a movie, as a documentary. It can't be watched for entertainment value, but as an eye-opener into the tragic and desperate lives of people growing up in a very harsh environment. Heart-rendering I think is the phrase.

Good topic R3
I personally like any good revenge movie. All versions of The Count of Monte Cristo.. from black and white up to the French subtext. Another older filmed I always liked with Lee Marvin... Hell in the Pacific...WWII flick well done no dialogue very interesting..all action..haven't seen it in 15 years or so..probably should buy it off amazon..

This is great. Every movie listed so far I have seen, except for PI and Prime, and Vampire Circus. You've all made some very good recommendations. Snatch was my favorite movie of that genre, though i don't know a label for that genre.
My listings will tend to venture towards the odd sorts, and here is another in the vein of strange: Donnie Darko. It was Jake Gyllenhaal’s 1st movie hit. It has some strange and unusual twists that always makes a movie worth while to me.
Here are a couple of recent releases i feel are very much worth watching:
The Illusionist: a love story about a very clever magician.
Altered: a sci fi thriller produced by the same folks that brought u The Blair Witch Project but don't let that throw u, as Altered is actually a good flick.

Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, Babel
Three of the best movies of 2006 all have one thing in common: a great up-and-coming Mexican director behind the camera. (Guillermo) Del Toro, Cuaron, and Inarritu are the three prongs of the Mexican invasion which will likely be a a major part of early 21st century cinema. Go see these movies, and if you liked them, try:
Y tu Mama Tambien Amores Perros The Devil's Backbone Cronos 21 Grams

I watch a ton of movies since switching from netflix over to blockbuster and have seen prolly every new movie to come out in the last year.
Personally, I preferred The Prestige over The Illuisionist and thought Babel was ok but nothing special. Maybe that's just my a.d.d. though in that I don't care for long, slow paced movies.
I like movies that I expect to be "B" movies going into them and end up enjoying them more than I thought I would. Crank would fall into that category for me. I didn't think much of Transporter 2 but do enjoy Jason Statham in the action genre. While the story line might be lacking in parts, Crank is action packed and keeps you entertained thoughout the movie which is maybe 90 mins. long, just about right.
Also, I would recommend the movie Unknown that recently came out. Basic premise is 5 guys wake up in a warehouse with amnesia. They discover that 2 of them have been kidnapped and 3 of them did the kidnapping, but don't know who is who and have to work together to escape the locked warehouse. It has some good plot twists you don't see coming.
If you haven't seen Silent Hill yet, then you're missing out. If you have seen it, see it again . One of my favorite movies from the past few years.
On another note, I just got Altered and will watch it tomorrow, so I'll see if Rich's recommendations are worth anything :P.

Ummmm...... Benicio Del Toro's one of my fav actors of all time, and he's, well, he's not Mexican. But if Puerto Rico invades I'll send him your note Karl. LOL. Awesome acting in 21 G, boring movie for my adrenaline tho, stellar in 'the usual suspects'....surprised noone brought that up yet....it'll blow your doors off if you havent seen it 10 times already like me lol and the one with Tommy Lee Jones (another fav of mine)....'The Hunted' methinks it was, as well as 'fear and loathing'....another I'm surprised not to see mentioned here yet......the usual suspects is a badass whodunnit with more twists than a breakdancer on a bad acid trip, fear and loathing is about a bad acid trip, and the hunted is about a special forces dude that's got himself in a pickle(I dont wanna give it away so I'll leave it at that), and would make for a really bad acid trip. PS....Don't do acid. Acid's bad, hmmmk? Ahhhh karl was talkin about guillermo, not benicio....nm the correction........ Also i have been informed by none other than the great karlw himself that my post here is falling short of his high standards of linguistic protocol.....apparently calling someone a dick in a post is ok tho. lmfao.

Hey Richard,
I recommended Searching For Bobby Fischer for your kids some time ago. Did you ever get your hands on that? I will also mention Good Will Hunting in this context. I guess I am fascinated by genius.
Contact may be my all time favorite movie. "If it's just us, it's an awful waste of space..." - I love that notion. I also like darker fantasy like The Matrix and Terminator series' and comedic fantasy like Groundhog Day and Back to the Future. Anything involving space, time, causality, fate will hold my interest. I love super powers, too, so the Harry Potter, X-Men, Unbreakable, and the Heroes TV series are all high on my list.
I enjoyed the Guy Ritchie films mentioned in this thread, but I also go for Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, and Jay & Silent Bob just to splash around some names.
Somebody mentioned revenge plots or what I would call what-goes-around-comes-around themes... The Sting and Shawshenk Redemption are two of the best, but I would add lesser known Jackie Brown.
I have a huge soft spot for B comedies of the 70's & 80's. No home should be without Animal House, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Caddy Shack, Stripes, Better Off Dead, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I've recently added Office Space to this list, and I know there are tons of others I am forgetting.
Anyway, that's my off-the-top-of-my-head list. Also, imdb.com, the International Movie Database, is an internet browser must for every movie buff. I'm sure that most people already know about this website, but for the few that don't, it is absolutely the movie goers bible...

I'll look out for those films nosovs.
I have 2 dvds that I rented to watch this week. One is Volver, the other is Tsotsi.
I will post again after I have watched them, to say what I thought of them.
Amores Perros was mentioned already. It's a film that comes to my mind whenever this conversation is had. I recommend it, if you don't mind some aggressive scenes in a film/movie. I don't own many dvds, but Amores Perros is one of them, 21 grams too.
On the more light-hearted genre.... I must say that Oh Brother, Where Art Thou is one of my favourite films

Another good Russian movie " The Siberian Barber" long 3 hours or so.. Good story of an American inventer and capitalist in tsarist Russia. Nice love story intertwined with much culture of that period. Actually a tragedy. Very professionally done. Unfortunately my copy bought in Russia does not work on my dvd player..bummer

well i watched Altered...it was ok, if you're into alien/ufo movies...i'd compare it to Texas Chainsaw Massacre where it was an ok movie but the most freaky part hands down was the 10 seconds of real life footage they showed at the end that the movie was based off of (which happens in both movies).
and My Super Ex-Girlfriend? O_o
i've watched alot, and i mean alot, of crappy movies over the past year but even i drew the line on that one :P
maybe its just me but i'd say bout 95% of all comedies nowadays are absolutely awful, should never be seen in the theatres, and only rented, if that...
the only comedy i've seen recently that i actually thought was somewhat entertaining was Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart

Well Marshall it is obvious you either have no taste, or no pulse. Lmao. Its Uma freakin' Thurman man**!!!! Anyhoo, Did I mention 'Super Troopers'? 'tis about a Massachussetts PD on the brink of being disbanded for lack of funding 'cuz of how serious they are about their jobs...Its a riot for anyone over say 14-15 on up is where Id draw the line at....BUT, don't take that as an endorsement for the other Broken Lizard films....they were all a letdown in my opinion.
** This in no way constitutes even a hint of the idea that Uma's Thurman is even HALF as good lookin' as my sweetheart :-* to ya Babe!!! lmao
