3 player pente

In college we played a lot of 3-4 person pente. Has anyone else played this way?

We had a slightly different capture rule:
1: Capture 10 pairs instead of 5
a. pairs could only be of same opposing color
or
b. pairs could be of any two colors.

We also played teams, though I can see how the internet could limit the feasibility of this due to one player creating two accounts in order to play as both sides of a team.

I'd like to see 3 person pente on this website. What do others think?

I will think it through, it's a big change and time is scarce at the moment.

Time is scarce because you are overseeing a site that has grown...what? 10x since you took over? You 'da man!

Thanks for considering it.

If all three players are active then I really is a fun variation.

Consider how one player can force another to make a play:
Player one has 3 stones in a row with a blocker on one side. He then places the fourth piece down to force one of his opponents to block his 5th stone. Player two can ignore the block and play wherever he wants, thus forcing player three to make the play.

It also allows for an open 4 to be blocked if the two opponents work together.

It is fun in real life play, though I'm unsure how it would pan out in an online setting.

Another possible rule change for 3 person:
I don't think player one would need the second move limitations.

What happens when 1 player resigns/timeouts? Play continues for the rest?

The two remaining players share the win.

This is a sub-optimal solution, but I don't see a way around it.

I rarely play any of the variants, but this one might cause me to try a game or three.
? how would you set up games?
? games unrated?
? if a team game, I want pente_gon? LOL
this is asking a lot of Rainwolf

I think if one player resigns or times out, play should continue with the next scheduled player's turn. Otherwise, one player can clearly have the win and get cheated of half of the credit for that by a resignation.

Retired from TB Pente, but still playing live games & exploring variants like D, poof and boat

no worries, this is not for the near future, some other big changes need to happen before I can begin work on this.

I can see how a player would drop out or manipulate the final round by quitting/resigning. Not sure how to mitigate that issue. I could see a forced final round idea having benefits.

Has anyone else played this way before?

Thanks for considering it. I didn't realize that only one person ran the website! This is the best website I've come across for pente, thanks for keeping it up rainwolf.
